Program History

The Friday Night Supper Program (FNSP) was co-founded in 1984 by Arlington Street Church, a Unitarian Universalist congregation, and Dignity Boston, a congregation of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered Catholics. Both organizations are inclusive, welcoming people from all walks of life; FNSP follows their lead.

Arlington Street Church and Dignity Boston continue to show their support for FNSP by providing both funding and volunteers. Arlington Street Church also donates space and utilities for the program.

FNSP has been an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation since 1994. The program is supported by contributions from individuals and grants from corporations and foundations. A major source of support is Project Bread and its annual Walk for Hunger. FNSP is also supported by the religious and civic
community of Greater Boston, including partnerships with First Church in Boston, Old South Church in Boston, and Trinity Church Boston.

At the core of FNSP is a group of long-term volunteers, many of whom have been with the program since its inception, all of whom are dedicated to its mission. FNSP also hosts new volunteers every Friday many of whom come through Boston Cares.

The program benefits from strong, long-term relationships with other
hunger-relief organizations as well, including The Greater Boston Food Bank and the American Red Cross.
