Leadership - Board of Directors
Karen Boss, Board President
Karen Boss became active in the Friday Night Supper Program in Summer 2007 and joined the board in the Fall of that year. "I volunteered the first time at FNSP thinking I wouldn't enjoy it. Boy, was I wrong. It is a great program, the guests are wonderful, and I look forward to going each week."
Karen is Director of Programs at Boston Cares. Before coming to Boston Cares, Karen spent six years working in college student activities in Los Angeles, Gettysburg, and Boston and three years traveling and living in Asia teaching scuba diving. Karen has always made time for volunteering. She graduated from Simmons College with degrees in communications and sociology and received her Master’s of Arts in Education from the University of Maryland at College Park. She grew up north of Boston and has lived in the Fenway, Mission Hill, Dorchester, and currently lives in Jamaica Plain.
Ayanna Braxton
Ayanna chairs the Communications Committee.
Kathy Connolly, Treasurer
Kathy Connolly has been a Friday Night Supper volunteer since January 2008 and currently serves as Treasurer. After volunteering at several organizations, Kathy felt a strong connection with the Friday Night Supper program during her first visit. 'Friday Night Supper is such a welcoming environment, for both guests and volunteers. The program runs like a well-oiled machine while serving a very basic need in providing a nutritious meal to the hungry within our community. It is quite a rewarding experience each week.'
Kathy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a MBA in Finance from Boston College. She has worked for several major retailers throughout her professional career. Since 2002, Kathy has served various roles, primarily in Finance and Business Planning, for Shaw's Supermarkets / Supervalu, Inc.
Ted Kaplan
Ted Kaplan, a Boston-area native, has been involved in high tech management, entrepreneurship, and higher education for many years. An engineer/MBA by training, he spent several years in the computer graphics/CAD systems industry, followed by founding and running a computer software training firm in the Back Bay. Over the last eight years, Ted has migrated to teaching math and physics at the college level, conducting courses at Bentley College and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.
“On New Year’s Eve 2007, I encountered a small group of volunteers selling hot coffee and snacks, while encouraging donations and volunteer support for the FNSP. I learned more about this organization and its efforts to reduce hunger through its ongoing program and became volunteer, and have found it to be a very rewarding community service activity.”
Ted is an Electrical Engineering graduate of Cornell University and holds an MBA from Boston University. He is a single dad with two children.
Alice Knowles
Alice Knowles has served on the board of the Friday Night Supper Program since December 2005. She joined the board after serving as President of Dignity/Boston, one of the FNSP's founding organizations. She was initially motivated to seek a more active role with the FNSP because of Dignity/Boston's connection with and continued commitment to the organization.
Alice 's professional and personal life has been dedicated to serving marginalized populations. She is currently a data analyst for Partners HealthCare Community Benefit Programs and has been the donor services manager for Oxfam America, a consultant for HIV case management and homeless healthcare systems, the MIS manager for a community mental health system, and a staff member for community residence programs serving people who had been institutionalized for over 20 years. She is an active member of Dignity/Boston, has staffed a domestic violence hotline, and has served on the board of a day care service. The FNSP enables Alice to keep social justice near to her heart.
Robin McGuire
Robin McGuire has been a Friday Night Supper volunteer since the summer of 2007. Having worked with many dinner programs for the less fortunate, she found FNSP through Bostoncares.org. “I was quite taken with the dedication and professional manner of the volunteers and staff for Friday Night Supper and wanted to do more for the group.” New to the Boston area Robin is glad to be able to be part of the FNSP Board of Directors and is looking forward to using her twenty-plus years in marketing on the Communications committee. In addition to the FNSP Robin volunteers with other organizations in the Boston Cares network.
Kate Wilkinson
Kate Wilkinson has been a Friday Night Supper Program volunteer since December 2002. She was drawn to the program one Sunday when Arlington Street Church volunteers were making up Christmas packages with warm clothes and toiletries for FNSP guests. Kate jumped into the production line and has been volunteering ever since. She is currently the FNSP's Volunteer Coordinator and loves telling new volunteers about the program (and warning them not to walk in front of the stove)! Kate graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts in English, is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity at Boston University, and hopes to become a Unitarian Universalist minister.
